The driver of a tanker truck was killed in a fiery crash that shut down Florida’s Turnpike in both directions in Miami-Dade on Thursday, authorities said. The northbound lanes have since reopened.

Florida Highway Patrol said they responded to the crash with injuries in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike at mile marker 23 for Bird Road shortly before 10:30 a.m.

Drivers in the southbound lanes were being forced off at Southwest 8th Street.

“The truck lost control, overturned, and collided into the center median concrete barrier wall,” FHP said.

The driver died at the scene. Their name was not immediately released.

Troopers closed the Turnpike in both directions. Eventually, the northbound lanes reopened.

Video shows the tanker truck on its side, covered in soot. First responders approached and put a white sheet over what is presumed to be the victim.

The investigation continues.
