One person is recovering in the hospital after trucks and equipment belonging to Miami-Dade County caught fire in a southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood on Thursday morning.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said they responded to reports of multiple vehicles in flames in the area of Southwest 103rd Place and Southwest 51st Street shortly after 9 a.m.

When firefighters arrived, they found multiple unoccupied vehicles fully engulfed in flames, with one vehicle making contact with a live powerline, officials said.

It appeared that the county vehicles were doing work in the canal behind one of the homes when something went wrong. When NBC6 crews arrived at the scene, deputies with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office were warning that the power lines were on fire.

Multiple neighbors said they heard what sounded like an explosion. When they stepped outside, they saw flames shooting from the county vehicles.

Officials said Florida Power & Light shut down power to allow the firefighters to safely extinguish the flames.

Officials said an adult was taken to the hospital. More information about their injuries was not immediately available.

Neighbor Heriberto Moreno stumbled upon the fire during his morning bike ride.

“The truck that was cleaning in the canal there suddenly exploded,” he said.

The fire was extinguished, leaving behind at least one of the trucks with a charred front cabin and melted tires.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
