A death investigation involving a Doral Police officer was underway in southwest Miami-Dade on Wednesday, officials said.

Deputies responded to the area of Southwest 157th Avenue and 160th Street shortly after 6:20 a.m. for a report of an unresponsive male, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office officials said.

The department’s Homicide Bureau took over the investigation, but there was no foul play suspected, officials said.

Doral Police later identified the officer as Erwin Fernandez in an Instagram post. Records showed he was a school resource officer at Downtown Doral Charter Elementary.

“We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of kindness, prayers, and support from our community, neighboring agencies, and all those who have reached out during this difficult time,” the post read. “We respectfully ask that you continue to keep Officer Fernandez’s family, loved ones, and our Doral Police family in your thoughts and prayers, and kindly honor their privacy as they grieve.”

Doral Mayor Christi Fraga also released a statement on his death.

“Today, we say goodbye not only to an exceptional public servant, but to a man who wore his badge with integrity, humility, and an unwavering sense of duty,” her statement read. “His kindness, hid dedication to serving others, and his steadfast commitment to the safety of our community will forever remain in our hearts.”

Sources who worked with the officer told NBC6 he died by suicide.

“As Mayor of the City of Doral, and on behalf of our City Council, our employees, and the entire community that had the privilege of knowing him, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, his friends, and his brothers and sisters in the Doral Police Department,” the mayor’s statement said. “While we know that no words can ease the pain of a loss like this, we pray that God grants them comfort, strength, and peace in the days ahead.”

A large procession including an ambulance and dozens of police motorcycles and vehicles was seen traveling on the Florida’s Turnpike to the Dolphin Expressway before arriving at the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office.

No other details were immediately known.
