A Miami-Dade man accused of stabbing his estranged wife to death in front of their young child back over seven years ago won’t be able to represent himself at trial, a judge ruled during a tense court hearing Wednesday.

Onelio Castro-Arroyo, 58, is facing a murder charge in the killing that happened back in May of 2019.

According to an arrest report, Castro-Arroyo called 911 to report he’d killed his wife, who was found stabbed 16 times inside her car while their 7-year-old daughter was in the back seat.

The report said Castro-Arroyo dropped a “sharp edged weapon” and a blood soaked T-shirt into a dumpster after the murder.

Castro-Arroyo pleaded guilty in 2015 to first-degree arson in an unrelated case and was sentenced to five years in state prison followed by 10 years of probation.

He was released in December 2018, just months before the fatal stabbing.

While he hasn’t been tried or convicted in the stabbing, the allegations led to a probation violation, and he was sentenced to 60 years in prison in 2019.

Castro-Arroyo appeared in court on Wednesday for a hearing that was supposed to be about a possible plea deal, but instead he told the judge he wants to represent himself in the case.

“They have not given me the opportunity in this court to defend myself. I do not have an attorney to represent me, and it’s good that the cameras are here today to listen to this and for the people to hear this, so they know what you do in this court,” Castro-Arroyo said through a Spanish interpreter. “I don’t trust this attorney or you.”

Judge Ellen Sue Venzer ruled that he is not competent to represent himself but is competent to stand trial.

Prosecutors offered a 20-year plea deal on top of the 60 years he’s already serving, but Castro-Arroyo didn’t accept.

The trial is set to begin Oct. 19.
