Florida officials are reacting to a deadly earthquake that shook Colombia on Monday.

At least 20 people were killed, and dozens of buildings collapsed in cities across western Colombia after the powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the South American nation.

Several residents were trapped under debris, injured, and others had to evacuate their homes as far as the capital of Bogotá.

“I’m closely monitoring the situation following the powerful earthquake that struck Colombia and was felt across the region, including Ecuador,” Florida Sen. Rick Scott wrote on X. “Anne and I are praying for the safety of the Colombian people and everyone affected. Colombia is a great friend and important strategic ally of the United States, and we stand with President @ABDELAESPRIELLA and the Colombian people as they recover.”

City of Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins posted the following statement on Instagram:

“My heart is with the people of Colombia today as we monitor the aftermath of the powerful earthquake that struck the western part of the country. We are thinking of and praying for all those impacted, their families, and the first responders working to keep people safe. Miami is home to a large and deeply loved Colombian community, and we stand with them. Colombia is in our hearts today.”

NBC6’s Valerie Ryan was in Bogota visiting her family when the earthquake struck.

Ryan said that at around 7:30 a.m., she was sleeping and felt her bed shaking. She then woke up to her cousins screaming that there was an earthquake.

Fortunately, Ryan and her family were not injured.

The Global Empowerment Mission in Doral said that crews have been activated.
