The wife of the suspended Palm Beach County Clerk of Court and Comptroller accused of child sexual abuse is speaking out to support her husband.

Michael Caruso, 67, was arrested last week on charges including kidnapping, molestation, lewd or lascivious exhibition, luring or enticing a child and child abuse.

According to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Caruso is accused of sexually abusing a child under the age of 12 multiple times over two years.

One of the alleged incidents happened on a cruise ship, the other in Orange County. The young victim is someone Caruso knew, authorities said.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended Caruso following his arrest. Caruso was later ordered held without bond.

Caruso’s wife, Tracy Caruso, released a statement saying her husband is innocent.

“I know my husband. I love Mike, I believe him, and I believe in his innocence. I stand firmly beside him as he faces these serious allegations and works to clear his name,” her statement read, in part. “These accusations are false and do not reflect the man I know or the life we have built together. There is far more to this story than what has appeared in the headlines, including important context surrounding how these allegations came about. In short time, those facts will come to light.”

Tracy Caruso also announced that she will resign from the public boards on which she serves.

Newly obtained records also reveal this is not the first time Michael Caruso faced allegations involving a child.

According to a 2012 Delray Beach Police report, the Department of Children and Families received an anonymous tip alleging Caruso had been “molesting” a child known to him “for over a year,” and he had “sexually abused another” in the past.

Investigators interviewed several people, including the alleged victim, who denied being sexually abused by Caruso. One witness noted Caruso’s behavior was eccentric and unusual.

That investigation was closed in 2013 and deemed unfounded. NBC6 has reached out to Caruso’s lawyers about the previous investigation.

Caruso’s next court hearing is scheduled for Friday in Orlando.
