Early voting is now underway across Broward County, and voters have nine days to cast their ballots before primary election day on Aug. 18.

One of the races getting a lot of attention in Broward is the Democratic primary for Florida’s 20th congressional district.

Saturday was the first day of early voting in Broward County, and was a chance for voters to have their say in a Congressional race that’s drawing a lot of attention.

“This has been a district that’s been represented by an African American since 1992, when Alcee Hastings was elected in that seat,” said NBC6 political analyst Alex Penelas.

That history is part of why this race, District 20, is so closely watched.

The district was redrawn this year, which changed its makeup, and now, ten candidates are competing for the Democratic nomination.

Penelas said it’s not just about political strategy, but that representation matters to many voters in the historically Black district.

“It still matters to many people that they want someone that has lived their life, that’s experienced their experiences, to be representing them in Congress,” he said. “So it does matter.”

And the race is just one of many on the ballot.

Broward County Supervisor of Elections Joe Scott said voters shouldn’t wait until November to pay attention.

“A lot of the local, very important local races are going to get decided in August,” Scott said. “So waiting until November shouldn’t be an option for anybody.”

And unlike on election day, when voters have to go to their assigned precinct, they can vote at any early-voting location in Broward County.

They need to make sure to bring a current and valid photo ID with their name and signature.

Early voting continues through Aug.16, polls are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day, and voters can cast their ballot at any early voting location in the county.
