The mother of a 5-year-old girl who was killed in a shooting at a Florida City home is now facing charges in her death, after she told authorities that the child’s brother pulled the trigger, according to a new arrest report.

Ashley Marie Hosendove, 32, was booked into a Miami-Dade jail Wednesday on charges of aggravated manslaughter of a child and culpable negligence in the shooting on June 10.

According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, officers with the Florida City Police arrived at the home in the 1400 block of Northwest 1st Court after receiving reports of a shooting shortly before 2 a.m.

Five-year-old Ja’nova Parks was found shot in the torso, and officers brought her and her mother to Homestead Baptist Hospital. The little girl was later airlifted to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital, where she died from her injuries.

At the time, Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Det. Angel Rodriguez said there were three adults and two children in the home during the shooting, including the girl’s 4-year-old brother, but it was not clear how she was shot.

Hosendrove was arrested the next day on an unrelated charge and later released, but she had not been accused in her daughter’s death until now.

A new arrest report reveals that officials brought Hosendrove in for questioning on Aug. 12, before she was arrested and booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

According to that report, when officers arrived at the home, they saw Hosendrove carrying her daughter out of the residence “wrapped in a white blanket soaked in blood.” Police asked who shot the girl, and Hosendrove replied that it was her minor son, the arrest report states.

Ja’nova had been shot in her right arm and torso, authorities said.

Later, when investigators searched Hosendrove’s home, they found “items of evidential value, including a firearm.”

Most of what Hosendrove revealed in her interview was redacted from the report, but at the end, investigators concluded that “due to the fact that the defendant neglected to secure the firearm properly and displayed a conscious indifference of the welfare of her children, which resulted in the death of the victim, the defendant was charged with one count of aggravated manslaughter of a child and one count of culpable negligence.”

Hosendove appeared before Miami-Dade Judge Mindy Glazer on Thursday.

“It’s very tragic because the gun was not secured properly, even though it was in her fanny pack,” Glazer said.

Glazer ordered her held without bond until her next hearing.

Meanwhile, Ja’nova’s paternal grandmother, Latisha Ellison, said she’s still grieving the loss of her granddaughter.

“I know that she loved her kids. I do know that. And I can’t take away from her. But at the same time, it was her job to protect them,” Ellison said. “I don’t care what Ashley have to deal with right now. All I care about is Ja’nova. I care about finding out what happened to Ja’nova.”
