A portion of Krome Avenue was closed Friday as multiple brush fires were burning in southwest Miami-Dade, bringing the smell of smoke and hazy conditions to the area.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials said Krome Avenue between 8th Street and 88th Street was closed due to low visibility in the area due to the fires.

The Trail fire has burned 25 acres and was 80% contained as of Friday morning, according to the Florida Forest Service. The nearby Radio Tower fire had burned 188 acres and was 50% contained.

A third blaze, the Caddis fire, was also nearby and had burned 75 acres, with 0% containment.

The fires are burning in the Everglades east of Krome Avenue, closer to residential areas than fires in the past months. Residents west of Florida’s Turnpike near Kendall Drive will be able to smell the smoke in the air.

No injuries or damages have been reported, and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue was assisting the Florida Forest Service in the fire fight, officials said.

Dry conditions have provided kindling for the fire. The fires are burning where South Florida is down more than a foot of rain.

The fires are also leaving behind stagnant smoke because of the light wind. The calm conditions will pick up between 5 to 10 mph as the day goes on to help push the smoke north and west, away from the metro areas. But until the wind picks up, the smoke will linger.
